Canary Grass (Dumbi Sitti)
The most damaging grass weed in wheat. It looks so like wheat early on that farmers miss it, until it heads with a short club-shaped spike. Its leaf is a duller green and the base of the stem is usually pink or purple, which is the reliable way to tell them apart.
How to scout
Walk the field 25 to 30 days after sowing and pull up suspect plants to check the stem base colour. Pink base means canary grass.
Action threshold: Spray at the 2 to 4 leaf stage. After that it competes hard and herbicides work poorly. Rotate herbicide groups — resistance to this weed is now widespread.
