Nitrogen Deficiency

The oldest, lowest leaves go pale yellow first and the yellowing runs from the leaf tip down the midrib in a V shape, because the plant moves nitrogen from old leaves to new growth. The whole crop looks thin and pale and tillering is poor.

How to scout

Check which leaves are yellow. Old leaves first means nitrogen; new leaves first means iron or zinc, and the treatment is completely different.
