Iron Chlorosis

medium risk Mar, Apr, May, Jun, Jul, Aug

The newest leaves turn yellow while the veins stay sharply green, giving a net-like pattern. Older leaves further down stay normal. It is a lime-induced problem: the soil usually has plenty of iron, but high pH and calcium carbonate lock it up.

How to scout

Confirm by which leaves are affected — newest first with green veins is iron. Nitrogen shortage does the opposite and starts with the oldest leaves.

Action threshold: Adding iron to a limey soil mostly wastes it. Use a chelated iron spray on the foliage, improve drainage, and stop over-irrigating.
