Red Pumpkin Beetle

high risk Mar, Apr, May, Jun, Jul, Aug

A small shiny orange-red beetle, about the size of a wheat grain, that eats the leaves of melon and gourd plants. It bites round holes in the soft young leaves and can finish a seedling off in a day or two. Its white grubs live in the soil and eat the roots and any fruit lying on the ground.

How to scout

Walk the field in the warm part of the morning and look on the young leaves for the orange-red beetles and for the round holes chewed through them.

Action threshold: Spray as soon as you see about one beetle on every plant at the two to four leaf stage, because seedlings at that stage can be lost altogether.
