SOP(Sulphate Of Potash)

Overview

SOP (Sulphate of Potash) is a potassium fertiliser from Agritas. It supplies potassium as sulphate rather than chloride, with sulphur alongside it — over 50% K2O and over 17% S. It is not a crop protection product and has no action on any pest, weed or disease.

Mode of action

Supplies potassium and sulphur in plant-available form. Potassium runs the crop's water balance, moves sugars into the grain, boll or tuber, and thickens cell walls against lodging and heat; sulphur goes into protein and oil. Being free of chloride it suits potato, tobacco, citrus and the vegetables that will not take muriate of potash.

Dose & application

Rate: take it from the pack. Put it in the soil at land preparation or as a top dressing; it dissolves, so it can also go through fertigation. Nothing here is a spray for disease — this is a nutrient, and no rate on this page should ever be read as a disease treatment.

Why it pays

Potassium is the nutrient a heavy crop runs short of last and misses most: without it bolls and fruit do not fill, stems stay thin, and the crop wilts sooner than it should in heat. The sulphate form also feeds the sulphur that oilseeds and brassicas need, and carries no chloride — which is why it goes on potato, tobacco and citrus where muriate would not.

Field tips

Potassium moves slowly in the soil, so it is worth getting on early rather than after the leaf edges start to scorch. Light sandy land leaches it and heavy-yielding cotton and sugarcane strip it — those are the fields to watch.

Safety

An ordinary fertiliser to handle. Keep the bag dry, wear gloves because the dust dries the skin, and wash your hands afterwards. There is no pre-harvest interval, because there is nothing in it to withhold.
