Wild Oat (Avena fatua)

Wild Oat (Avena fatua) is a common and highly competitive annual weed that affects various cereal crops. It is known for its rapid growth and ability to compete aggressively with crops for nutrients, water, and light. Its seeds can remain dormant in the soil for several years, making it difficult to control.

Affected Crops:

  • Wheat
  • Barley
  • Oats
  • Other cereal crops

Identification:

  • Appearance: Wild Oat resembles cultivated oats but has longer, rougher seed coats and more spreading seed panicles.
  • Growth Habit: It grows up to 1.5 meters tall and has long, thin leaves.
  • Seed Characteristics: Seeds have a characteristic twisted awn (bristle) that aids in dispersal and persistence in the soil.

Damage:

1. Competition: Wild Oat competes with crops for vital resources such as water, nutrients, and light, leading to reduced yields.
2. Yield Loss: In cereal crops, Wild Oat infestations can lead to significant reductions in grain yield and quality.
3. Seed Dormancy: Wild Oat seeds can remain viable in the soil for several years, making it difficult to eradicate.

Control Methods:

Agritas offers effective herbicides to manage Wild Oat infestations:

1. Pendimethalin 33%EC
• A pre-emergence herbicide that controls Wild Oat and other weeds before they germinate.
• Application: Apply to the soil before weed seeds start to sprout.
2. Repcil (Glyphosate 45%)
• A non-selective herbicide for broad-spectrum weed control, including Wild Oat.
• Application: Use as a post-emergence spray when Wild Oat is actively growing, but before it matures.
3. Cleanado (Clodinafop)
• Specifically designed to control grass weeds like Wild Oat in wheat fields.
• Application: Apply at the early stages of weed growth for best results.

Additional Tips:

  • Crop Rotation: Rotate crops to reduce the build-up of Wild Oat seed banks in the soil.
  • Weed Monitoring: Regularly inspect fields to catch Wild Oat infestations early and take timely action.

How to scout

Walk the field 25-30 days after sowing. Wild oat is bluish-green with a leaf that twists anticlockwise, unlike wheat.

Action threshold: Spray at the 2-4 leaf stage; later sprays work poorly.
