Loose Smut

The whole head emerges as a mass of black powder instead of grain. The powder blows away within days, leaving a bare stalk. The fungus lives inside the seed, so a field looks clean until heading and then the infected heads appear scattered through it.

How to scout

Count black heads across 100 running feet at heading. This tells you whether your seed source is clean for next season.
