Cutworm

Young plants are cut clean through at ground level overnight and left lying beside the hole. The grey-brown caterpillar hides in the top inch of soil beside the plant during the day and feeds after dark.

How to scout

Scratch the soil within two inches of a freshly cut plant in the morning — the curled caterpillar is almost always right there.
