This is a fungus that lives on the leaf. It makes small raised brick-brown or reddish spots that burst open, and rubbing them leaves a rusty powder on your finger. When there are many of them the leaves dry early, maize grain stays light, and in sugarcane both the weight and the sweetness of the cane drop.
How to scout
Turn over the leaves of ten plants at five places and rub a spot with your thumb; if a brown powder comes off on your skin, it is rust.
Action threshold: Spray when the spots have spread up to the leaves around the maize cob, or to the top three leaves of the cane, and are still increasing.
