Oval greenish-grey blotches with brown borders on the leaf sheath at the water line, spreading upward as the canopy closes. In a dense, heavily fertilised crop it can climb to the flag leaf and cut grain filling badly.
How to scout
Part the canopy and look at the sheath just above the water line from maximum tillering onward.
Action threshold: Treat when lesions climb above the middle of the plant. Wider spacing and less nitrogen keep it down.
