Gummosis

high risk Jul, Aug, Sep, Oct

Amber gum oozes from cracks in the trunk near ground level, the bark below turns dark and dies, and the tree slowly declines with yellowing leaves. It follows waterlogging and planting too deep, where the bud union stays wet.

How to scout

Scrape the bark at the collar of any declining tree. Dark, sour-smelling tissue under healthy-looking bark confirms it.

Action threshold: Expose the collar, cut out the dead bark back to healthy tissue, paint with a copper paste, and above all stop water standing against the trunk.
