Damping Off

Seedlings collapse at soil level with a dark pinched stem, usually in patches that widen daily. It is worst in over-watered nursery beds with poor drainage and crowded sowing.

How to scout

Check the nursery every morning. A widening bare patch, rather than scattered dead seedlings, is the sign.
