Termite
Plants dry out and pull out of the ground with the roots eaten away and packed with soil. Damage appears in patches, worst in fields with unrotted stubble or farmyard manure that has not fully decomposed, and in light sandy soil under dry conditions.
How to scout
Pull up plants from the edge of a dry patch, not the middle. Look for soil-filled hollow roots and mud tunnels on the stem.
Action threshold: Treat the soil rather than the leaves. Fully rot farmyard manure before applying it, and avoid leaving loose stubble in a termite-prone field.
