Black Scurf

medium risk Oct, Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb, Mar

A soil fungus that lives on the seed potato and in the field soil. It kills young sprouts before they come up, so patches of the field stay empty, and it leaves hard black specks stuck on the skin of the new potatoes. The crop is still safe to eat, but those black specks make the potatoes hard to sell.

How to scout

Dig up a few plants in the bare patches and look for brown sunken sores on the underground stem, and at harvest look for black specks on the tuber skin that do not wash off.

Action threshold: No spray on the standing crop will remove it, so treat the seed potatoes with a fungicide before planting whenever that field or that seed has shown black specks before.
