Armyworm

Armyworm is a fast-spreading pest that attacks many important crops. These pests feed on leaves, shoots, and fruits of plants, causing significant damage that affects both the yield and quality of crops. Armyworms are particularly dangerous for crops like maize, wheat, and vegetables.

Affected Crops:

  • Maize
  • Wheat
  • Rice
  • Vegetables: Tomatoes, potatoes, cabbage
  • Forage crops

Damage:

1. Leaf Damage: Armyworms consume the leaves, reducing the plant’s ability to photosynthesize.
2. Damage to Fruits and Shoots: The pest also attacks fruits and young shoots, leading to reduced yields.
3. Rapid Spread: Armyworms spread quickly, causing widespread damage to crops in a short period.
4. Stunted Growth: Severe infestations can halt the plant’s growth, and in some cases, lead to plant death.

Control Methods:

Agritas provides effective products for controlling armyworms:

1. Super Jet 2.5%EC (Lambda-Cyhalothrin)
• Highly effective against armyworms and other pests.
• Application: Apply when early signs of infestation appear, ensuring full coverage of the affected crop.
2. Veento 1.9%EC (Emamectin)
• Offers quick action and long-lasting protection.
• Application: Apply immediately when signs of armyworm infestation are noticed, following the label instructions.
3. Morwet Duo
• A spray additive that improves the coverage and effectiveness of insecticides against armyworms.
• Application: Mix with insecticide and apply thoroughly to affected crops.
4. Worm Gen
• A specialized product formulated to disrupt the life cycle of armyworms and eliminate them effectively.
• Application: Spray on crops as per the label’s guidelines for optimal control.

Additional Tips:

  • Regular Crop Monitoring: Inspect crops frequently to detect early signs of armyworm infestations.
  • Timely Spraying: Develop a spray schedule based on weather conditions and pest activity to control armyworms effectively.

How to scout

Look into the whorl of young maize for ragged holes and moist sawdust-like droppings. Check 5 spots of 10 plants each.

Action threshold: Spray at 10% of plants showing fresh whorl damage.
